The First Lesson

I have been passionate about photography for over twenty years. My journey started when I first borrowed a film camera from a friend. It was a Yashica SLR camera, and I do not even remember what lens I had with it. Everything were manual; you set the shutter speed and aperture, and the camera gives a simple reading if exposure is going to be under or over. The first time that I went out with it to photograph the world, I loaded a roll of affordable 36 exposures from the supermarket. I drove around and clicked away at different spots in town. That roll of film just kept going and I was thinking that I was getting my money worth with a few extra frames. Things did not seem right after going passed 36 for that many shots. Then, I realized that I might have made one of the most first-time film shooter mistake of not loading the film properly. I opened the back cover and saw it hadn't moved a frame at all. My first day of photography journey ended in disappointment and a lesson learned.

The Practice

Over the years, I have developed various technical skills and practiced many so-called "rules". However, photography is a art form that is different than many other. I, as a photographer, can only control a handful of variables. Time does not stop. Everything change as time continue to move forward. The way I practice photography is always prepared and participated to anticipate. A great image could only be captured at the right vantage point at the right time. Perhaps these "rules" had already been engraved in my mind and became a second nature, however I now shoot focusing mostly on capturing the emotions with visually pleasing compositions.

My Approach

When working with my clients, my approach is simple. I let them be themselves and be comfortable when being photographed. With a family, I usually try to get them interact with each other as if I am not even there. I would tell them not to look at the camera and there is no need to pause or pose. Most of the time, I could trust my instinct and capture when I see through the viewfinder. I found that it works best with clients whom are normally a bit camera-shy. If it is a baby or children session, I ask the parents to just play with them. Have fun in a park! Let your baby go wild on the floor! Sometimes, my clients have some ideas and I would try to make that happens as well. Currently, I am accepting clients within Greater Toronto Area. Please refer to my service pricing and contact information. Hope to hear from you soon!
